The D40 is a very capable camera to learn on. If you had to pick between buy a new body or buying new glass, I would recommend investing in good glass. In theory, a good lens will last you years/decades.

I had attempted to get it repaired but they weren't able to fix it, so I shelved it. Then camera phones took over and my Nikon D40 was left in the wardrobe. These are what you want on your D40 AF-P = stepper motor in the lens. Your D40's AF system cannot communicate with these lenses so avoid Aperture type:
