The handrail clearance of 2.25" is actually a reduction, it used to be 3". In every version of code manuals I will right that OSHA requirement to make sure none of my designers use the smaller code allowed value.

In essence, a stairway that is open on both sides and is less than 44" wide (typical of most industrial stairs) is only required to have guardrails (meeting all of the OSHA requirements), it is not required to have a separate handrail.

Note that OSHA specifies minimum handrail member sizes. Also note that OSHA General Industry handrails are 2-rail handrails, which don't meet some of the building code requirements.

2024年5月31日 · Just to comment on this item- I normally am dealing with OSHA requirements- but under the old rules, a stair handrail/guardrail was REQUIRED to be between 30" and 34". So if you meticulously followed OSHA requirements of the time, that stairway no longer meets current OSHA rules (although generally grandfathered in).
