I joined an online cat asthma group, and while we're still trying to determine if my cat's diagnosis is correct, it turns out that coughing was a pretty common symptom for the people's cats in the group.

It sounds like a dry cough with just a little "rattle" but it sounds "deep". She's an INDOOR cat only. Has never been outside. She's 7 years old. She grooms constantly.

He won't jump down to the floor, but he'll hack in whatever position he was in, ie., if he was sleeping curled up, he'll just lift his head and hack -- extending his head/neck.

So, a "cough" could be hairball related, but obviously I don't know if that applies in your situation. Just a reassurance that not every cough is a heart problem.
