Hurricane Milton's insured losses could range from $30 billion to $50 billion, but it's far from analysts' "worst-case scenario" of $100 billion.

Milton spread destruction across Florida overnight, whipping up tornadoes in areas not accustomed to such ferocity and cutting power for more than 3.3 million energy customers. The storm killed at least 12 people and put 11 million at risk of flooding.

One of the worst tornado outbreaks occurred during Hurricane Ivan in 2004, which caused a multi-day outbreak of 127 tornadoes. The deadliest hurricane-spawned tornado was in October 1964, when 22 people died in Larose, Louisiana, during a twister from Hurricane Hilda.
