The stock market fell sharply after Wall Street reacted to numbers from ASML Holdings that came out a day earlier than the company was expected to report. The numbers were released on data providers like FactSet and Bloomberg.

Wall Street was on track to open with gains Thursday on another big day for corporate earnings and the latest government economic data. Futures for the S&P 500 rose 0.4% before the bell while futures the Dow Jones Industrial Average moved 0.

Exxon Mobil dropped 2.6%, and energy stocks fell to some of Wall Street's sharpest losses after oil prices tumbled more than 4%. A barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, has fallen back toward $74 from more than $80 last week.
