Google has moved for an emergency stay on the Epic judgment, as the Court gave just three weeks to make sweeping changes to the Play Store.

Play Store seems to be rolling out functionality to allow unlimited simultaneous app updates & downloads, up from 3 previously. The functionality was spotted on a Pixel 9 Pro XL running Play Store version 43.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, faces numerous legal challenges in the US that, together, threaten its core business.

The injunction by U.S. District Judge James Donato in San Francisco outlined the changes Google must undertake to open up its lucrative app store, Play, to greater competition, including making Android apps available from rival sources.

A federal judge on Monday ordered Google to tear down the digital walls shielding its Android app store from competition as a punishment for maintaining an illegal monopoly that helped expand the company’s internet empire.

For three years, Google will have to let third-party Android app stores access the Google Play Store's catalog of apps "so that they may offer the Play Store apps to users," said the injunction issued by US District Judge James Donato of the Northern District of California.

“The provisions are designed to level the playing field for the entry and growth of rivals, without burdening Google excessively,” Judge James Donato wrote in the court order. “As competition comes into play and the network effects that Google Play unfairly enjoys are abated, Google should not be unduly constrained as a competitor.”

Google has asked a U.S. appeals court to block a judge’s order requiring the Alphabet unit to redesign its app store Play, as the tech giant prepares for what could be a lengthy appeal in its antitrust battle with "Fortnite" maker Epic Games.

Google has requested the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to temporarily halt a ruling that compels the company to open its Play Store to third-party competitors while it appeals an antitrust decision won by Epic Games.
