While some were stocking up in anticipation of wintry weather, others were just doing their regular grocery shopping.

A winter storm threatens to bring a mix of snow, ice and freezing temperatures to metro Atlanta. Atlanta Fire Rescue says danger can accompany those conditions especially when you are trying to keep your home warm.

North Georgia and metro Atlanta residents are gearing up to be hit with some serious inclement weather this weekend – snow and ice included. One grocery retailer is urging people not to “panic buy."

On Jan. 8, 1973, 52 years ago today, Atlanta's worst ice storm since the Great Depression wrapped up, but left a mess behind. After kicking off with freezing rain and sleet the previous morning, over an inch of ice accumulation made roads impassable, downed trees, power lines and telephone lines across northern Georgia.

The FOX 5 Storm Team has declared Friday and Saturday Storm Alert Days due to the threat of winter weather in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. "It used to be for the masses — but now is totally out of reach for most people."

Steep driveways are a common sight in Sandy Springs and there are solutions to not being stuck during the storm.

Before the weather system’s arrival, crews will apply a brine solution to interstates, state routes, bridges and overpasses in anticipation of freezing rain, sleet, ice, and snow.

A significant winter storm is expected to impact Atlanta, Georgia, and surrounding areas later this week. Impactful accumulations of snow, sleet and freezing rain from early Friday into early Saturday is likely.

Georgia is preparing for a blast of winter weather at the end of the week, and state officials say they are getting ready for whatever comes our way.
