Some are depictions of everyday life (hunting, etc.); some are thought to be sacred and shared only among tribe members; and the meaning of some may be lost to the passage of time. If you Google "Anasazi Petroglyphs of the American Southwest", there is a Prezi presentation that does the best job I have seen at laying out the various theories/interpretations.

I paid for my admission and a couple of items, and the young lady was leaving as soon as I was finished. The guide was also taken another group up to the mesa, so there was no one tending the gift shop.
The Puye website is not working properly. I visited Puye in the mid-90's, and we were able to walk the grounds on a self-guided tour. Are you still able to do this? The tour also sounds like a great option. What times are the tours, and what are the costs? We will be there over Labor Day weekend and would like to make plans since we are staying in Taos. You're supposed to be accompanied by a tribal guide, but sometimes if they have no other clients, they'll let you walk around on your own. I don't remember how much we payed, but there are 3 different tours to chose from. The plateau ruins, the dwellings and both. I think we payed like $30 per person for the dwellings tour, but since they let us go up on our own, we got to see the entire site. To be honest, the site isn't super spectacular. If you've already been there, I would just go to Bandelier even though it will be crowded, which is cheaper and more interesting. No idea if Puye is open on Labor Day. Do you HAVE to visit during Labor Day? Labor Day overall is a bad day to visit anything because of huge crowds. If you still end up going to Puye, ignore the sign at the gate that says, "Tour pass required beyond this point" and just drive through. You purchase your tickets at the site.
Yes, Puye Cliffs is open year around. We normally only close for our traditional feast days which are June 13 and August 12, and Christmas day. Weather...
