An early morning hike down part of South Kaibab Trail is always an exhilarating way to start the day. Ooh-Aah Point or Cedar Ridge are popular destinations for day-hikers on the trail. Especially in the summer, you want to get your hiking done in the morning. It'll take 1-3hours depending on how far you decide to go. Take the orange shuttle from the visitor center to reach the trailhead. Bring adequate water and maybe some salty snacks. Besides the views right in the village itself, there are great viewpoints to the west along Hermit Road. During the spring, summer, and winter, you'll use the free shuttle to get to them. In the winter, you'll use your own car. About 3 hours will cover it. There are also a series of great viewpoints to the easy along Desert View Drive. It is only reachable with your own vehicle. Takes about 3 hours to cover it.

Grand Canyon Village and the entire south rim will be over run with tourists from Memorial Day on. Keep in mind even though you have a car,it can be tough to find a parking space. Also, the road to Hermits Rest and many of the overlooks are open only to the park shuttle buses in the summer. If you want to avoid crowds stay in Flag or drive 200 miles around to the north rim which very few people visit. The Hulapai nation on the west rim near Peach Springs is also less crowded and features the famous glass bottom sky walk out over the canyon. If you do stay at the south rim, check places in Tusayan, just outside the park boundary.. There is also a lodge at Cameron in the Navajo nation to to the east located on the edge of the Little Colorado Gorge. From there,it is an easy drive back down highway 89 to Flag. No matter where you go and stay, it will be hot during the day and cools off considerably overnight as you are in the high desert.
